EDPB Supports Strengthening EU Cybersecurity
EDPB and EDPS advocate for stronger EU cybersecurity, balancing security with data protection.
The EU is actively intensifying its crackdown on cybercrime and organised crime, with recent actions spearheaded by Eurojust and Europol. These bodies have successfully coordinated international operations, leading to arrests in major trafficking rings, like the recent blow to a violent cocaine trafficking network in Scotland, and the dismantling of a guns-for-cannabis network. Cross-border judicial cooperation is proving crucial in combating serious economic and financial crimes, resulting in arrests and asset freezes, recovering millions of euros.
For citizens and businesses, these efforts translate directly into enhanced security and protection. Stronger cybersecurity reduces the risk of data breaches and financial fraud, safeguarding personal data and economic stability. Simultaneously, dismantling organised crime networks means safer communities and a reduction in illicit trade, directly impacting public safety and market integrity.
Looking ahead, the direction is clear: an ongoing push for a robust and rights-respecting digital environment. The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) are consistently advocating for strengthening EU cybersecurity while maintaining strict data protection. This involves a balanced approach that promotes security measures with privacy-by-design principles, ensuring fundamental rights are upheld as the EU continues to fortify its digital defenses against evolving cyber threats.
