Stopping Misleading Green Claims
EU cracks down on greenwashing with tougher rules on environmental claims.
The European Union is actively advancing its circular economy agenda through multiple avenues. The European Commission champions sustainable production and consumption patterns, aiming for a cleaner and more competitive Europe by reducing waste and promoting resource efficiency. The European Parliament continues to back the Green Deal as the primary strategy to achieve climate neutrality and sustainable development, encompassing policies from emission reduction to renewable energy. Financial support is also being mobilised, demonstrated by the EIB's €225 million investment in Italy to support Iren Group's circular economy initiatives and energy efficiency projects.
These actions have tangible benefits for both citizens and businesses. New regulations on vehicle circularity and the management of end-of-life vehicles, provisionally agreed by the Council and Parliament, aim to make vehicle production more sustainable. This includes increased use of recycled materials in new vehicles, potentially reducing costs for manufacturers and consumers, while also minimizing environmental impact. The EIB's investment in waste management, water treatment, and renewable energy infrastructure not only enhances environmental sustainability, but also creates new economic opportunities and supports sustainable development.
Looking ahead, the focus remains on fully implementing the Green Deal and expanding circular economy principles across various sectors. The EU continues to leverage data and knowledge from the European Environment Agency to inform and support policy implementation. Further investments and regulatory measures are expected to drive the transition towards a resource-efficient and climate-neutral economy, ensuring a just transition for all regions and citizens. The ongoing emphasis is to create a cleaner, more sustainable, and economically resilient European Union.
