EU Disease Surveillance

The EU, primarily through the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), is actively engaged in robust disease surveillance and response. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the ECDC is providing member states with new operational guidance for Ebola preparedness and recently activated an EU Health Task Force to support global responses to outbreaks, like the current one in the Democratic Republic of the Congo caused by the Bundibugyo virus. It also maps the expanding presence of disease-carrying insects, working with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and monitors alarming trends like record high bacterial STIs, with gonorrhoea and congenital syphilis cases nearly doubling.

This work is crucial for citizens and businesses alike. Proactive surveillance protects public health by providing early warnings and coordinated responses to outbreaks, both within and outside EU borders, preventing widespread health crises and their associated economic disruptions. Updated guidance for diseases like Ebola directly enhances national health authorities' capacity, ensuring preparedness for imported cases and minimising transmission risks. Furthermore, tracking vector-borne diseases informs public awareness and preventative measures, safeguarding citizens' health from emerging environmental threats.
