EU Court Rules Against Hungarian Food Price Law
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has issued a judgment concerning a Hungarian law on foodstuff sales. The court found that national legislation requiring retailers to offer mandatory promotions, even if it forces them to sell products at a loss, is contrary to the EU's freedom of establishment. The case was brought by the retailer Penny Market. This ruling reaffirms the primacy of EU single market principles over certain national economic regulations. Hungary may now be required to amend its legislation to comply with the court's decision.
