EDPS Annual Report 2025: protecting people digitally
EDPS 2025 report outlines efforts to protect EU citizens' data in a changing digital landscape.
The European Union is actively shaping its digital landscape through a multi-pronged regulatory approach. Key efforts include the Digital Services Act (DSA), overseen by the European Commission, which is making online environments safer by obliging platforms to address illegal content and enhance transparency. Simultaneously, bodies like the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) are championing stronger EU cybersecurity frameworks, aiming to balance robust data protection for individuals with manageable compliance for organisations.
For citizens, these measures ensure greater safety online, empower users against illegal content, and guarantee stronger protection of their personal data. Businesses benefit from clearer rules and a more predictable digital market, although the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) advocates for simplifying digital rules to boost competitiveness, especially for SMEs. This push reflects an ongoing effort to balance robust protection with innovation.
Looking ahead, the EU is committed to fostering extensive cross-regulatory cooperation between various bodies like the EDPB. This aims to create a more coordinated and effective approach to regulating the complex digital environment, spanning data protection, cybersecurity, competition, and consumer protection. The goal is to ensure consistent application of digital rules across borders, improving the overall coherence and efficiency of EU digital regulation and securing a trustworthy digital future.
