SRB: Banks ready for operational resolution
EU banks show progress in resolution readiness, boosting financial stability.
The EU is actively fortifying its financial stability policy, focusing on proactive measures and robust safety nets. Key institutions like the Single Resolution Board (SRB) confirm that European banks are making significant progress in building financial buffers, meeting MREL targets, and demonstrating operational readiness for orderly resolution, as shown in their latest 2025 assessment. Meanwhile, the European Banking Authority (EBA) reports that Deposit Guarantee Schemes (DGS) have grown to €85 billion, directly enhancing protection for citizens' savings up to €100,000. Regulators, including the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), also engage in global "fire drills" to test critical financial infrastructure like Central Counterparty Clearing houses (CCPs).
These efforts are crucial for citizens and businesses alike. Stronger bank resolution capabilities mean less reliance on taxpayer bailouts during crises, protecting public funds. Increased deposit protection ensures that individual savings remain secure, fostering confidence in the banking system. Furthermore, regular health checks on major banks by the European Central Bank (ECB), alongside the EBA’s risk assessments, provide transparency and early warnings against emerging threats like geopolitical tensions and cyberattacks, which could otherwise destabilise markets and impact economic activity.
Looking ahead, the direction is clear: an ongoing commitment to strengthening the financial system. While significant progress has been made, the SRB Chair, Dominique Laboureix, acknowledges remaining challenges in banking crisis management. This signals a continued focus on refining the framework and adapting to new risks. Regular data releases and ongoing monitoring by the ECB and EBA will continue to provide the necessary insights to ensure the EU's financial sector remains resilient, adapting to evolving market dynamics and safeguarding long-term economic stability.
