Résumé politique

The European Union is intensifying its crackdown on human trafficking, demonstrating a robust, multi-agency approach. Recent successes include a global operation coordinated by Europol, Frontex, and INTERPOL resulting in 1,024 arrests and the identification of numerous victims across various forms of exploitation, including sexual exploitation and forced labour. Eurojust, the EU Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, plays a pivotal role in facilitating cross-border judicial cooperation, notably supporting Ireland's first-ever convictions for labour trafficking and coordinating major busts in the Netherlands and Romania. These efforts highlight a strategic focus on dismantling criminal networks and protecting vulnerable individuals, including the tracing of 45 forcibly transferred Ukrainian children by Europol.

This concerted action directly impacts citizens and businesses by enhancing security and upholding fundamental rights. The dismantling of trafficking rings generating illicit gains, such as the EUR 1.5 million seized from a sexual exploitation network, safeguards economic integrity and prevents criminal enrichment. For businesses, a clearer, safer labour market emerges when exploitation is aggressively combated. Furthermore, these operations strengthen the EU’s external borders and internal security, addressing threats from organised crime and migrant smuggling networks, as seen in the joint operation between Spain and Europol against Algerian smuggling routes.

Looking ahead, the EU is committed to strengthening judicial responses and cross-border cooperation even further. Eurojust recently convened specialised prosecutors from across the EU to share best practices and enhance strategies, co-chaired by the EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator. This emphasis on improved coordination and intelligence sharing among national authorities and EU agencies like Europol and Frontex signals a continuous drive towards more effective and comprehensive strategies against modern slavery, aiming to proactively disrupt these networks and provide greater protection for potential victims.
