The European Investment Bank (EIB) is currently driving the EU’s industrial policy forward through significant strategic investments. The EIB Group recently approved €7.9 billion in new financing, directing substantial funds into technological innovation, sustainable infrastructure, and critical sectors. This includes a €3 billion commitment to Airbus for decarbonisation and digital transformation in aerospace, €650 million with Bpifrance for renewables and defence SMEs, and €125 million to Orano Med for advanced cancer treatments. These concrete measures demonstrate a clear focus on enhancing Europe's industrial capacity and technological leadership.
For citizens and businesses, these investments translate into tangible benefits: highly skilled jobs, cutting-edge medical treatments, greener transport, and a more secure continent. The EIB's new strategic direction, endorsed by EU Finance Ministers, prioritises security, competitiveness, and strategic autonomy. This means reduced reliance on external powers, particularly in areas like green energy and critical raw materials. Firms, especially SMEs and mid-caps, are receiving targeted support to innovate and expand in key strategic sectors.
Looking ahead, this push for a robust European industrial policy, championed by the EESC, is set to deepen. The EIB, in collaboration with national promotional banks, will continue to operationalise this strategy through further financing decisions. This comprehensive approach aims to solidify Europe's position in global innovation, build resilience in critical supply chains, and accelerate the green and digital transitions, ensuring long-term economic growth and prosperity across the Union.
