The European Union is spearheading global efforts in artificial intelligence governance with the groundbreaking AI Act, the world's first comprehensive legal framework on AI. Officially published as Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, this landmark legislation establishes harmonised rules for AI systems placed on the Union market and used within the EU. It categorises AI systems based on their risk level, imposing stricter requirements on high-risk applications in critical sectors, aiming to address the inherent risks of AI technologies while fostering innovation.
This pioneering approach matters profoundly for both citizens and businesses. For citizens, the AI Act ensures increased safety and ethical standards for the AI technologies they encounter daily, safeguarding fundamental rights and promoting trustworthy AI. Businesses operating or deploying AI in the EU must now adhere to these new, clear obligations, which positions Europe as a global leader in responsible AI development and deployment. The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is already outlining its role in ensuring trustworthy AI in public administration.
Looking ahead, the AI Act will be rolled out in stages, with full implementation expected by 2027. This process involves the establishment of governance structures and the active engagement of member states. The EU is setting a global precedent for comprehensive AI regulation, influencing international discussions and potentially shaping how other jurisdictions approach AI governance, ensuring the ethical evolution of AI while harnessing its benefits.
