Circular Economy at Heart of EU's Strategic Autonomy
Embracing a circular economy boosts EU's independence and resource efficiency.
The EU is intensifying its commitment to a circular economy through a suite of new legislative and financial initiatives. The European Commission is taking significant steps to combat greenwashing, introducing new criteria that require companies to substantiate environmental claims with verifiable data. This push, part of the broader Circular Economy Action Plan, aims to ensure consumers receive accurate information about product impacts, fostering trust and enabling informed, sustainable choices. Simultaneously, the European Parliament is tackling fast fashion, exploring new laws to promote durable and recyclable textiles and reduce waste.
These efforts matter directly for citizens and businesses. Consumers will benefit from clearer, honest information, empowered to make genuinely sustainable purchases without being misled by deceptive advertising. Businesses, meanwhile, face new requirements for transparency in their marketing and production processes. The Council of the European Union and Parliament have also reached an agreement on vehicle circularity, promoting sustainable vehicle production and improving end-of-life recycling, including increased use of recycled materials in new vehicles.
Looking ahead, the direction is clear: a more regulated and sustainable marketplace. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is actively funding these transitions, providing €225 million to groups like Iren for circular economy and energy efficiency projects in Italy. The trajectory involves comprehensive policy reforms across key sectors like textiles and automotive, alongside substantial financial backing, all geared towards a robust and verifiable circular economy where environmental claims are credible and resource management is optimised.
